Week 2 - Camp NaNoWriMo on The Veranda

When it was originally conceived, NaNoWriMo was meant for writers with day jobs and hashtag adulting responsibilities. The idea was to chip away at your gargantuan novel 1667 words a day between meetings, on your commute, while you're at the laundromat, while you pick up your kids from violin class etc. Even if your draft was the shittiest of shitty first drafts, you would have something in existence instead of ideas floating in your head.

The goal of NaNoWriMo and Camp NaNoWriMo is not to have a publishable novel. It's to have an editable draft.

But writing day after day is difficult. There are very few writers who write full time. Most of us have to balance writing with other responsibilities.

We’re now the second full week of Camp NaNoWriMo. This is typically when writers start to feel a slump in their writing marathon. Maybe you missed a few writing sessions. Maybe you got distracted. Maybe you took a much needed break. That's ok. Be proud of yourself for making the commitment to write. Be proud of how much you wrote in the last few days. If you're feeling the slump, take a break from writing. Read, play some music, treat yourself to a bubble bath, or do whatever you need to do to re-energize yourself.

Activity for Week 2:

  1. The Veranda recently released the first issue of our literary magazine called Masalazine! What other publications do you like to read for inspiration or relaxation? Drop your links below!

  2. Tell us why you're writing your current project. Sometimes when we feel burnt out by a daily task, it can help to remind ourselves why we do what we do.

  3. Writers aren't just writers. We need to unwind and decompress to keep our momentum going. What other (non-writing related) hobbies or talents do you have? Feel free to post pics or videos. For the next week, take some time to partake in one of these hobbies.
